Painting with enamel is also a wet technique, done in a more painterly manner, blending and shading many thin layers of color to build value and dimension in the finished work. I´ll begin by explaning te grisaille technique, which was really the first tipe of enamel painting, done so beautifully by the artist of Limoges during the 15th century. Grisaille comes from the French word gris, meaning gray, and grisalle enamels are primarily made up of gray tones.
Limoges enamelist working in grisaille may have drawn their graphic inspiration from the portafolios of prints and illustrated books that were common at the time. They even shared their main drawing tool, the scribe, with printmakers.
Pintar con esmalte es también una técnica en húmedo, que se realiza de una manera pictórica, mezclando y sombreando muchas capas finas de color para conferirle valor y dimensión al trabajo finalizado. Empezaré explicando la técnica de Grisalla, que fue, en realidad, el primer tipo de esmalte pictórico, hecho muy bellamente por los artistas de Limoges durante el Siglo XV. El término Grisalla viene de la palabra francesa gris, que significa gris, al igual que en español, y los esmaltes de Grisalla son principalmente realizados en tonos de gris.
Los esmaltadores de Limoges que trabajaron la grisalla dibujaron sus inspiraciones gráficas de las carteras de las impresiones de los libros ilustrados que eran comunes en la época. Ellos incluso compartían la principal herramienta de trabajo, el escribano, con los grabadores.
