PAINTING TECHNIQUES
It is my opinion that of all the enanelling techniques, painting with enamel requires the most skill and control. In this case, I am referring to painting with vitreous enamel, blending de ground glass in layers using opaque and transparent colors, to create tonal and color variations.
Historically, this technique has been referred to as Limoges because it was in the city of Limoges, France, that the technique flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries. Studying these historical enamels in museums is for me a breathtaking and humbling adventure. The way the artists skillfully painted with glass is indeed impressive, and becomes even more so when you realize they were building and firing in wood-burning furnances and making their own glass!
Comparetively few contemporary enamelists paint it glass with the same detail and skill that was typical of true limoges enameling. If you practice blending and layering transparent glass, you´ll be able to execute other wet inlay enameling techniques, such as cloisonné, champlevé and plique-à-jour, with greater control
TECNICAS PICTORICAS
Es mi opinión que de todas las técnicas de esmaltado, pintar con esmaltes requiere la mayor habilidad y control. En este caso, me estoy refiriendo a pintar con Esmaltes vitreos, mezclando el polvo de esmalte en capas usando colores transparentes y opacos, para crear variaciones de tono y color.
Históricamentem esta técnica ha sido referida como Limoges porque fue en la ciudad de Limoges, Francia, donde la técnica floreció en los siglos XV y XVI. Estudir estos esmaltes históricos en los museos es una aventura impresionante y una cura de humildad. La manera en la que los artistas habilidosamente pintaban con vidrio es, de hecho, increible, mas aún cuando tomas consciencia que construían y le aplicaban el fuego con hornos de leña y hacían sus propios vidrios.
En comparación pocos esmaltadores contemporáneos pintan con vidrio con el mismo detalle y habilidad característicos del los verdaderos esmaltados de Limoges. Si practica mezclando y aplicando capas de vidrio transparente, podrás ejecutar otras técnicas de esmaltado húmedo, como el cloisonné, champlevé u plique-à-jour, con gran control.
